How to Install a Gallery Wall Without Stress (2-Minute Video Guide)

Installing a gallery wall can feel more complicated than it needs to be. Questions about spacing, alignment, and where to start often stop people before they even pick up a hammer.

I’m a visual person, so I rely on a simple, repeatable process that takes the guesswork out of hanging art. I put together this 4-minute video to show you exactly how I install a gallery wall in my own home using my artwork—but this method works for any art, in any space.

What you’ll learn in this video

In this short tutorial, I walk you through:

  • How to plan your layout before anything goes on the wall

  • A simple way to mark and hang without overthinking

  • Possible solutions if you don't want to put holes in your walls

This is the same approach I use when installing art in my home studio and living spaces.

A quick written overview

If you prefer a written summary, here’s the process I follow:

  1. Lay all your artwork on craft paper on the floor and finalize the arrangement first

  2. Mark the location of the art pieces on the craft paper and the location of the point where you will need to install your hanging device (nail or removable hooks, as I use in the the video)

  3. Attach the craft paper 'map' to your wall with painters tape
  4. If you are using nails, simply hammer your nails into the spots you have marked through the paper into your wall, then remove the paper and hang your art pieces

  5. If you are using other hanging devices, mark the spots where you need to hang them by poking through the paper and lightly marking the wall. Place your hanging device on the spots you have marked

  6. Install your art on the hanging device!

This method keeps things flexible and helps avoid unnecessary holes in the wall.

If you’re building a gallery wall around a group of paintings you already own, this method will help you bring them together with confidence. The video features my Black Birds Fly collection as a real-life example of how a series can live on the wall as one connected story.
